What is an ABA Routing Number?
An ABA Routing Number (ABA RTN) or Transit Number is a nine-digit code used in the US. It helps to identify the financial institution in a transaction. The financial institutions use routing numbers to help in sorting, bundling and shipping paper checks. But now, this number system incorporates new payment methods like ACH and wire.
The Federal Reserve Bank uses ABA RTN to process Fedwire fund transfers. Automated Clearing House uses it to process direct deposits, bill payments and other transfers. The American Bankers Association originally developed the ABA RTN system in 1910. Since 1911, they have partnered with different registrars to manage the RTN system.
At the moment, there are approximately 26,895 active ABA RTNs in use. Each financial institution in the US has at least one of these. The Routing Number Policy allows a financial institution to have up to 5 routing numbers. However, due to many mergers, a bank may have more than 5 routing numbers.
